Homemade chocolate syrup! No doubt that if you have children then you have the big name bottled stuff in your fridge…but what’s really in there (chemicals, extra sweeteners, HFCS)? I can tell you that mine has 4 ingredients and tastes even better. I bet you are wondering how long it takes to make….well if you have 5 minutes to spare and a basic stocked pantry you can make it right now!
This copycat Hershey’s chocolate syrup is totally amazing. It can be used for so many recipes…it works just like store bought stuff in all the recipes you’d normally use it in. I just love my homemade chocolate syrup recipe. It’s pretty much all I’ve used for about 10 years.
It’s naturally dairy free, gluten free, and can easily be made sugar free by substituting splenda or other sugar substitute.
Some of my recipes that use this Homemade Chocolate Syrup:
Monkey Milkshakes
Tin Roof Sundae
Nutella Blended Coffee Drink
Peppermint Mocha Cupcakes
Frozen Mocha Latte
Chocolate Covered Cherries Cocktail
Homemade Chocolate Syrup
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup cocoa powder
dash salt
1 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Stir together in a medium sauce pot. Boil 2-5 minutes, stirring rapidly, until sauce begins to thicken. Store in the fridge.
Makes about 2 cups.
aha, i like, i like!
What a great idea. I would have never thought of making my own.
I’m glad my kids aren’t standing next to me reading this because they’d be requesting it! Love the jar, too. I have a few of those that I found at Goodwill.
I sure wish that I would have had this during the summer. My granddaughter loves chocolate milk. I will print the recipe off and send it to my daughter. THen I will make my own some and I will enjoy some chocolate milk. I hate buying the ones at the store, due to the price and I am sot so sure what all is in it. Thanks for the recipe.
This looks great! I could just drink it! Will this mix up well for chocolate milk?
It makes the BEST chocolate milk!!!
Thank you so much! I’m on it right after dinner!
thanks for sharing! I don’t have the stuff in the bottle, its too expensive, but I do have all of your ingredients in the pantry!
Thanks for sharing!

just a little…
hmmm… i’ll try adding salt next time I make it.
adding a touch to anything sweet brings out the flavor and cuts that sugar flavor/sweetness down a tad.
almmost the same. Why do you add salt?
What a funny coincidence, I just made some yesterday too. Mine is just sugar, cocoa powder, water with a bit of vanilla stirred in. I’ll go see if yours is the same recipe.
Great blog! My chocolate syrup is the same except for I add 2 cups of sugar, and 2 tsp vanilla once it's removed from the heat.
I'm Susan W from the FG BB. LOVE your blog.
ok, so this is like magic. you have no idea. my family consumes chocolate syrup like maniacs. ESPECIALLY my little brother (i say little like he's still a kid hahaha he's 20). it never even occurred to any of us to make it from scratch!!!
tried this recipe, loved it, passed it on.
my mom and my brother are thrilled! love it love it! thank you!
Awesome! I'm so excited to try this! Thanks for sharing, Wendy!
Oh my gosh! that's IT????
Next, how about marshmallow sauce for ice cream… please??? 😀
Yummy!!! Super yummy!
I do that. Only without the salt. It goes great on chocolate ice cream with a hot brownie and whipped cream.
Sounds great Wendy!!
