Homemade Taco Seasoning
We love tacos, but I hate using store bought taco seasoning. It has too many preservatives, too much salt, and MSG. YEAH for taco seasoning without MSG! So, I started looking at a lot of make-it-yourself recipes and I came up with this Homemade Taco Seasoning based on what I liked from the recipes I found. Better yet, I made it with spices I already had in my pantry and didn’t need to make special trips to the store.
I know it looks like it might be really spicy, but it’s not. If you can handle the name brand version, then you should be fine with this one. {I just love copy cat recipes, don’t you?}
Making your own Homemade Taco Seasoning takes no time at all. I usually whip up a batch of this in under 5 minutes …okay really, I make a huge batch (like 10x this recipe). My family LOVES taco night and I I’ve found I use it in a lot of other dishes too. Just keep it stored in an airtight container or make individual use packets using snack-sized zip top baggies. This quick homemade taco seasoning will be your go-to taco seasoning for taco night.
What Can I Make With Taco Seasoning
Besides tacos, here are some ways I’ve used up this wonderful homemade taco seasoning:
Tortilla Soup & Taco Twists
Guiltless Beef Chimichangas
Slow Cooker Taco Meat
Taco Rice
Stupid 4-Ingredient Taco Dip
Tex Mex Taco Salad

I’m wondering if you changed the recipe? I used to make big batches of it and use it all the time…. I haven’t made it in a while and this last batch I made just didn’t taste the same as it used to. Hoping you can provide some insight but it definitely seems like way too many onions now.

Hi, I did update the recipe a little bit. Mostly to make more (the old one just made 4 tbls); however, I did update some ingredients as I have played with it over the years and found this mix to be more taco-y. 😉 w-
Here’s the old one for ya though:
2 tsps dried onion flakes
2 tsps chili powder
2 tsps cumin
1¼ tsps salt
¾ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
¼ tsp dried oregano
¼ tsp paprika
¼ tsp black pepper
pinch of cayenne pepper
1 tsp cornstarch

Great recipe, but I would add a can of diced green chili’s to really make it pop!

Thank you so much for this! It will come in so handy when I want to make tacos, but don’t remember if I have the seasoning in the pantry. It will save me a trip to the store!

Thanks so much for this!! I’m excited to try it out – We eat a LOT of tacos, and taco-seasoned meals. And I love the idea of having a better seasoning option! 🙂 Pinned ya too!

This looks great! I love making things from scratch, as I agree about the MSG, salts and other preservatives. I'm your newest follower and I look forward to more from you!

I'll have to try this one. I've tried a few others I've found on recipezaar, but none have been quite right for us. I'll let you know what I think.
