Slow cooker baked potatoes are the absolutely easiest way to make fluffy baked potatoes without heating up the kitchen! Microwaved potatoes are dry and tasteless, but this easy method for making slow cooker baked potatoes will give you perfect baked potatoes every time. One of the easiest slow cooker recipes around! Whether you have been slow cooking for years or you’re new to using a slow cooker, check out my slow cooker user’s resource guide for great slow cooker tips and my favorite slow cooker recipes.
This is probably a no brainer, but my method for making corn in the slow cooker seemed like a no brainer too, and yet, I got a huge response from it.
Sometimes, I don’t want to heat up my kitchen so I use my slow cooker for everything…even “baking” potatoes. It is so easy and they taste like they were baked (instead of microwaved…which I know nothing about, um…I don’t, really?!?!)
After you make baked potatoes in a crock pot, you can eat them as is for a simple side dish, or use them to create other recipes. I made a baked potato bar for supper. I set out all sorts of toppings and everyone made their own. Super easy supper! For lunch the next day, my daughter and I used the slow cooker baked potatoes to make Homemade Mashed Potatoes.
How to Make Easy Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes
You will need:
olive oil
kosher salt
potatoes
Spray the inside of your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
Clean potatoes really well, rub with olive oil and then coat with kosher salt. Place in slow cooker.
Cook on high for about 4-6 hours. Rotate them occasionally so that each side has a chance to touch the cooker (helps with even cooking).

My family loves having baked potatoes for supper, especially the grandchildren because they can top them any way they wish. I’m retired so I do the cooking during the week but it has gotten TOO hot (triple digits) to use the oven so this is what I do in the summer since I found your post. Using a crockpot also uses less energy so it is a win-win. Try rubbing the potatoes with kosher salt infused with rosemary & basil…delish! Many thanks from my family.
Wendy O'Neal says
Love the idea of using the rosemary and basil. Sounds delicious. w-

I’ve made my potatoes this way since I found your recipe and love it. I have a dumb question…can I do both sweet potatoes and regular potatoes at the same time?
Wendy O'Neal says
So glad you like the potatoes this way Patty. I don’t see why you couldn’t do both, but I haven’t tried. If you try it will you let me know how it goes? I’d love to know. w-
Peggy Kimes says
Instead of baking on high 4-6 hours, how long would you suggest on low?
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Peggy, I’d just cook all day then…probably about 8 hours. w-

Thank you!

These are the best Potatoes I’ve have ever ate by doing them this way in the crockpot. No heat in the kitchen. Especially Summer time. When you cut the oven on for a hour it heats the house to an unbearable temperature. It might not take a hour to cook in oven….But It will take forever for the house to cool back down because the air conditioner will be running and burning up a lot more energy! I did my own recipe the same as Yours but After coating them with the olive oil I use herb provenance as a coating on each potato as I put them in. If You Love herb provenance you should love them with this seasoning! They are so delicious!!! I slice onion slices on top too. Yum Yum ??❤️?❤️❤️
Wendy O'Neal says
Oh…what a great idea to use the herbs. I’m totally trying that next time. Thanks. w-

I’m confused – baked potatoes in an OVEN only take about an hour -why would you want you want to take 4-6 hours and consume all that energy to lengthen cooking time?
Wendy O'Neal says
I totally agree and I usually make them in the oven. But on crazy busy days when I’m not going to be home to bake them…then being able to make them in the slow cooker is a life saver! w-

On hot days, slow cookers are the answer. I can’t handle the heat of an oven that heats my kitchen and living area for over 3 hours.
Thanks for the slow cooker tips.
aaron carney says
It’s economical. Rule of thumb is that 8 hours in a slow cooker uses half the electricity of 1 hour in the oven. Just read this on another site.
Mikky says
Can you only do a single layer or could you stack a second layer, if there’s room, in your crockpot?
Wendy O'Neal says
I fit as many as I can in my slow cooker…so yes for a double layer!! w-
Maggie says
These sound great! Do I have to fill the crockpot at least halfway with potatoes or can I just put in a few?
Nicole says
Do you have to poke holes on the potatoes? I would love to try them in the slow cooker. . Thanks
Wendy O'Neal says
Nicole…I do not poke holes when I cook them this way. Enjoy!

Awesome, I’ve thought of doing it but wasn’t sure how it’d turn out – not to mention can’t eat a lot of potatoes with two type 2 and two hyper insulin (my son could eat lots and never gain LOL) Will maybe have to give this a try since we still seem to be in a heat wave.

Thanks for the great tip, Wendy! I have never tried this, but if we didn't us our grill so much in the summer I'm sure I'd be pulling out the crock pot more often. 🙂
Would you mind adding a link back to KTT? Thanks. 🙂

What an excellent idea! My daughter doesn't like eating them if I microwave them, so that's great to hear that they taste like they were baked rather than microwaved. 🙂
curt says
Microwave them for 10 minutes then put them in the oven under the broiler and rotate them every once in awhile until they are done.Taste just like a baked potatoe but faster.
