We love to grill out. Seriously…I don’t think any thing is better than a big, thick, juicy steak and a baked potato for supper. It would probably be my “last request” meal. Over the 16 years that Hubbyman and I have been married, he has perfected his grill master skills, including how to grill the perfect steak, he just really enjoys his time out by the grill! Make sure you use a great seasoning blend for your steak and it will make your Steak & Pepper Sandwich even tastier!
Last weekend we had friends over for a cookout (yes in February) and the weather was perfect. So perfect, in fact, that we lit up our firepit and roasted marshmallows for s’mores. We ended up sitting outside chatting for hours, just enjoying our company and the mild AZ winter we are having! {Don’t hate me!}
Steaks were on sale last week, so I bought a bunch and we cooked them up. We ended up with a couple leftover so I wanted to use them up on a tasty supper. Something a little different than my usual steak & feta salad {which is delicious by the way}. So I came up with a way to use my leftover steak to create this Steak & Pepper Sandwich which is reminiscent of the most amazing cheesesteak sandwich you’ve ever tasted! There is a method to my madness here and it will taste amazing if you follow the steps in order.
No leftover steak?!?! No problem…just cook your steak on the grill (or grill pan) while the peppers are cooking. It might take a total of 20 minutes if you have to cook the steak…but still….that’s not too bad for this amazing sandwich. Mine is sans cheese due to my dairy allergy, but Hubbyman says go for it if you can! Please use a good cheese, even though I know real cheesesteak sandwiches use Cheez Whiz.
Steak and Peppers Sandwiches
These steak and pepper sandwiches are a quick 15-minute supper that uses leftover cooked steak. T
Ingredients
- 16 oz steak, cooked and cold (leftover steak is perfect for this)
- 2 hoagie rolls
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1/2 onion
- 4 tsps olive oil, divided
- 2 tbsp butter (or butter substitute), divided
- salt and pepper
- 4 slices provolone cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Trim fat from steak and slice very thin strips. Cut onion and bell pepper into thin strips.
- In a medium sauce pan, heat 1 tbsp butter and 2 tsp oil over medium high heat and add onion and peppers. Salt and pepper to taste. Saute until lightly browned and soft about 7 minutes. Remove from pan and add in remaining oil and butter. Quickly saute steak slices until warmed. Lightly salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve steak and peppers on a warm hoagie rolls. Makes 2 sandwiches.

Notes
- The key is to use both oil and butter for flavor and to cook the onions/peppers before the steak to give the steak even more flavor. Make sure to use steak that is perfectly seasoned and slightly under cooked.

I’m in Chicago. We’ve spent the last 6 weeks not able to see the grass during our polar vortex so YES, I’m a LITTLE jealous! Those sandwiches look delish, hopefully it warms up soon to grill out!
