Best Gluten Free Irish Soda Bread
Last year was my first St. Patrick’s Day celebration without wheat, dairy, eggs. I realized that the meal is pretty easy to adjust except I really missed the Irish soda bread. There is just something about the bread that I make only once a year that couldn’t resist. So into the kitchen I went. Actually, making this gluten free Irish Soda Bread was pretty easy once I figured out how to keep it dairy free.
Gluten Free Dairy Free Irish Soda Bread
It was actually the buttermilk that was throwing me off, so after some quick research I figured out that I could actually sour any of the dairy free milks just the same way I would do a quick substitution with regular milk and vinegar. Who knew!
How to make dairy free buttermilk:
1 tbls vinegar
dairy free milk, enough to make one cup when combined with the vinegar
Combine vinegar and diary free milk in a glass and let sit 5-10 minutes to sour. Use as buttermilk!
I used a store bought gluten free flour, but any AP gluten free flour blend will work. This bread is amazing! It tastes, smells, and looks just like traditional Irish Soda Bread. It is absolutely amazing!!! It’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or anytime you have a craving for some good ol’ soda bread!
No St. Patrick’s Day meal is complete without traditional corned beef and cabbage (and by traditional…I mean traditional for Americans). Just wondering if the coconut milk is full fat or light.
Wendy O'Neal says
I use full fat coconut milk. w-
Eloise says
Will this work with a vegan egg replacement?
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Eloise, I used an egg replacer the first time I made it and it worked okay. I mean…nothing is like an egg, but I felt it was okay and ate it (because I couldn’t eat eggs at the time). Give it a try and let me know what you think. w-
Stacey says
Looking forward to giving this recipe a try! Was wondering, does the xanthan gum in the recipe need to be added if I’m using a flour blend that already has xanthan gum in it?
Thank you!
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Stacey, You do not need additional xanthan gum if your blend already has it. Hope you enjoy and Happy St. Patrick’s Day. w-

You must mean…total loaf…not ‘per serving’ right?
Wendy O'Neal says
LOL! Yes, sometimes technology goes crazy and the auto nutritional calculator apparently thinks we will eat the whole loaf. w-
sherri says
well that’s good to read…I mean, it looks really good, but not 2400 calorie/serving good
Thanks for posting…looks yummo ??

Bread like this is life…just putting it out there. I love the easy and gluten free aspect of this recipe. I also LOVE how similar it is to sourdough bread, which is one of those breads I just can’t keep my hands off of!
Denay DeGuzman says
This gluten-free Irish soda bread was a real lifesaver when my niece came over to visit. Everything she eats must be gluten free. She was telling me how hard it is to find gluten-free bread recipes that have a good texture and are super delicious. This is one of those rare recipe gems!
Natalie says
Such a great, classic recipe for those of us who can’t have gluten! I love the crust that the outside of the bread gets!
Susanne says
I love that you made this a gluten free recipe! Sometimes I can’t find gluten-free versions of my favorite recipes!! Thanks again! – Susanne
Bo says
I’ve scrolled up and down this page several times and failed to actually SEE the recipe and instructions. A little help please?
Wendy O'Neal says
Eek…Sorry about that Bo. Not sure why it wasn’t showing, but it’s there now. w-
Bo says
Wohoo! Thank you! Looks great. Can’t wait to try it out.
K. Morgan says
I made your gluten free Irish Soda bread twice now and have had the same problem. it comes out looking beautiful, smelling wonderful, but when you cut it open the bottom 3/4 inch is still doughy. The top is browned beautifully so I’m afraid to bake it beyond the 40 minutes you suggest. It tastes fantastic – I added a little orange zest and some currants. Do you have any suggestions that I can try. Thank you.
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi, it might be the brand of gf flour you are using or your baking soda could be old. However, you might just try putting a piece of tin foil over the top after it’s browned and let it continue cooking a little longer. w-
K. Morgan says
Thank you. I will try both.
Sharon Krol says
I made today and inside was beautiful but outside was quite hard in places. Is this the way it should be?
Wendy O'Neal says
Hmmm…it shouldn’t be too hard. More like a hard sourdough bread type crust. w-
Susanna says
Question: Which store-bought GF flour blend did you use?
Wendy O'Neal says
I don’t remember what brand I used for this recipe, but I love the King Arthur gluten free and the Tom Sawyer gluten free blends. I also like Cup4Cup, but don’t get it often because a lot of them have dairy in them and I can’t do dairy either.
Mea Salo says
Thank you, Wendy, I have baked your soda bread twice and I love it! So do my parents and my boyfriend. I’m a vegan who just quit gluten. I’m a raw food coach but I really enjoy baking in the oven every now and then. I made this bread pretty flat so that it has a lot of crounchy surface. So good!
Wendy O'Neal says
So glad you loved it Mea! w-
Awdur says
Would any non dairy milk work for this? We have coconut and almond allergies in the family. Could soy milk or cashew milk sub well?
Wendy O'Neal says
Any milk would work. I just like the thickness and texture of almond over other “milks”. w-
Awdur says
I have made this both with cashew milk and coconut milk. So good! I added 3 Tbl of caraway seeds since that is what my traditional (gluten) Irish soda bread calls for. Perfect with corned beef and leek soup for St. Patrick’s day!
Anita says
Did you mean to say full fat coconut milk in this response, since it’s what’s listed in the recipe?
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Anita, I’ve made it with the coconut milk and almond milk. I was responding to another question about using other milks. You can pretty much use your milk of choice, but those two are my preferred in this recipe. w-
Alexa says
Thank you! I was just thinking about how badly I wanted Irish Soda bread, but cant’ have gluten! 🙂
Katie says
I have tried this recipe twice and both times it has not raised and been too doughy in the middle.
Any suggestions/ help?
Many Thanks
Debra A Miller says
Try adding a tsp of baking powder. Is baking powder GF?
Wendy O'Neal says
Yes..that would help. There are GF baking powder options on the market. w-
Joyce says
Wendy, would your recipe of gluten free AP flour blend work well with this recipe, or should I find one without coconut flour? I just went gluten free one month ago and St. Patrick’s Day is a huge day of celebration for my family. Thank you for posting this recipe!
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Joyce…it should work fine. Or try the King Arthur GF flour.
christine says
hi, where do you buy xantham gum? What kind of vinegar? I want to try making this tomorrow! Thanks
Wendy O'Neal says
I get xanthan gum in the “healthy” section of my grocery store. You should be able to find it. And just use regular ol’ white vinegar! 🙂
