These copycat APPLE FRIES taste just like the ones at LegoLand. I had a chat with the cook and he told me their secret….give them a try!
Granny’s Apple Fries at Legoland
A couple weeks ago my family went on a fun long weekend to San Diego (well…it’s been a few years now..this was originally published in 2014). While we were in the area we decided it would be fun to take the kids to Legoland before they got to old. Our son is at the perfect age to fully enjoy Legoland and we knew it was now or never.
The kids’ favorite area at Legoland is the pirate area. It’s honestly our favorite part of the park and probably everyone else’s since it’s always the busiest. There is tons of water and a free water play area (and by free…I mean with regular admission and not the water park). It’s awesome because the kids get to cool off with the water and run off some of the energy that they have from standing in the ride lines. Bring a towel or have them wear their swim suit under their clothes…or don’t worry about it and let them have fun just the way they are. Just know…they will get wet!
CopyCat Apple Fries
One of our favorite snack shops is near the pirate area. Granny’s Apple Fries is right between the Pirate area and the Castle area. For about $5 (2014 price) you can have warm apple fries with a sweet vanilla whipped cream. After one bite, I knew I needed to figure out how to make these tasty treats at home.
The apple fries are lightly coated, deep fried, then tossed with cinnamon sugar. They are amazing and super simple to make at home. Plus…they are perfect for a Lego Birthday Party if you want to serve a fun food from the park.

Apple Fries: LegoLand Copycat Recipe
These delicious deep-fried apple fries are just like ones they sell at Legoland! They're perfect for dessert or a sweet after-school snack.
Ingredients
- 4 Granny Smith apples
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/8 cup cinnamon
- frying oil
- whipped cream for dipping
Instructions
- Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep frying pot over medium high heat.
- Core and peel apples. Slice apples into pieces about the shape and size of french fries. Keeping the apple pieces about the same size ensures that they cook evenly. Toss the apple pieces in the cornstarch until well coated.
- In a separate bowl, combine cinnamon and sugar, then set aside.
- In small batches, fry the apples for 2-3 minutes until very lightly golden. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and drain apple fries on a brown paper bag or several paper towels. Sprinkle liberally with cinnamon sugar mixture after they have drained for a minute or two.
- Keep frying in small batches until all the apples are cooked. Serve immediately.

Though I worked in food service, often in front of a deep fryer, throughout my high school and college years, thank goodness for my waistline, it never crossed my mind that you could deep fry foods at home. Just recently I was gifted a nice electric deep fryer and memories of those years in food service came rushing back. Perhaps I should mention WHERE I worked: Legoland California. I used to love it whenever I was asked to fill in at Granny’s Apple Fries, because it was my favorite treat in the park (and it was easy). I wanted to recreate these fries for my family, who had never tried them, which led me here. Though the recipe was not hard at all I was/am foggy on a couple details. The recipe you have here is accurate, but it’s missing a step or two. I am 100% certain that the apple fries made two trips through the fryer. The first dunk was shorter and at a lower temperature. I even remember that the primary shop employees called it blanching, which I thought involved water, not oil. In any case, after that first brief fry, the apples would cool (I am a bit hazy here, but I think refrigerators were usually involved but if we were too busy a batch may not make it into the fridge. Finally, the cooled, blanched apples were fried a second time at a higher temp, giving them a lovely outer crunch that contested a much softer interior. The one part of the process that I’m most unsure of is whether or not the fries were re-coated in anything after being blanched and cooled. I want to say we did and that it was flour or something other than the initial cornstarch. Now it really bugs me, so I’m determined to figure out the answer. Thank you for this recipe! I’m going to test this one out for sure.

Interesting. I asked when we were there for full ingredients as it was a gluten allergy. They assured me no flour. No matter what….my copycat version is super close to what we had at Legoland. Gluten Free and Delicious! w-

Carolyn Vierra says
Hi Wendy have you tried these in the air fryer? If so how were they.
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Carolyn, I don’t have an airfryer so I haven’t tried them that way. But I would be interested to know how they work. If you try it, please let me know. Thanks. w-

Why the Granny smith? Have you tried other types of apples?
Wendy O'Neal says
They use Granny Smith apples at LegoLand, so that’s what I used. They also tend to hold up better than other types of apples in baking and frying. w-

Oh these sound great! I have never had the legoland version, but you have sold me.
Wendy O'Neal says
No need to try the original Mallory! But you have to make these…they taste like little apple pies!

The original Granny Apple Fries are amazing at Lego Land. Our family have had them a few times. I am definitely going to make these for my kids so we can have them at home Thanks for the recipe.

We are going to Legoland next week – my son will love these! Any other tips fro finding gluten free or clean food there?
Wendy O'Neal says
My tip, honestly, would be to take some safe foods. They say they have glutenfree buns and other stuff, but I didn’t have a good experience. Although, the apple fries are super amazing…with or without their wipes cream.
Alek Davis says
