Healthy Popsicle Recipes
Summer is finally here! The kids are out of school and we’ve been busy visiting local museums, picnicking at the park, working in the garden, and playing in the sprinklers. It is super hot out there! And naturally, with the hot weather, comes cold treats. Just like everyone else, my kids absolutely love popsicles. They ask for one every afternoon. Okay, in all honestly, they really ask for two or three each day. I really don’t like the idea of giving them so much of the high fructose corn syrup, the aspartame, and the artificial dyes that are commonly found in store-bought packaged popsicles. Luckily, it is so easy to make them at home with better ingredients so we can indulge without regret.
My favorite popsicles are yogurt based, but my kids usually prefer the icy ones. All of us love adding fresh, ripe strawberries and blueberries. These in-season fruits are so flavorful that the popsicles burst with an incredible natural sweetness. We also make quite a few chocolate versions in my house. After all, who doesn’t love the decadence of a rich chocolate popsicle?
Homemade popsicles are simply healthier and taste better than store bought, so you don’t have to feel guilty about all of the added junk. No matter what you’re craving or what type you prefer, I’ve listed something for everybody: real fruit, yogurt, interesting flavors, and even several combinations. Treat your kids (or yourself) to one of these healthy popsicle recipes. You are guaranteed to find something delicious to help keep you cool!
How to Make Popsicles for Kids
There really is no wrong way to make healthy frozen popsicles. I usually just throw some fruit that is slightly overripe {you know the kind the kids won’t eat anymore} and a little simple syrup into my blender and let it go until smooth and then poor into a fun mold. Just make sure there is enough time for them to freeze before the kids get to them. I try to whip up a batch of popsicles after the kids go to bed so they are fully frozen and ready to go the next day.
To make simple syrup, combine equal parts water and sugar in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar has dissolved. Allow to cool and store in the refrigerator until ready to use or up to a couple weeks.
