When I was growing up, I had years of orthodontia work. Even major jaw surgery. It was horrible and quite painful; however, I have beautiful teeth now. A bright spot during all this, way my mother’s “medicine”. We called it medicine because it helped ease the pain…really, it was her Orange Julius. I have such fond memories of her making this drink for me every couple weeks. It was our little secret!
Unfortunately, my 7 year old daughter inherited my teeth and jaw issues so we have already begun her orthodontia treatments. Poor thing! Until…..I remembered that secret mommy medicine that my mom used to make. I don’t know what all she put in my drink, so I created my own version. It’s fairly simple really and very forgiving.
I surprised Kaylynn with her glass of “medicine” last week and she was really excited for it…after she realized it wasn’t really medicine after all.

I LOVE Orange Julius! They disappeared from our mall but apparently Dairy Queen bought them and now you can get Orange Julius AT Dairy Queen! Who knew!
Your recipe looks easy and I will try it. I may try a couple of the other variations in the comments, as well.

I had a sibling who actually worked at Orange Julius one summer, and he wrote down a recipe that is as close to what they use as possible. I will share with you – just because I LOVE this drink, and like making it without using up my ice cream to do so.
6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate
1 cup Milk
1 cup Water
1/4 cup or less of sugar (you can use sugar substitutes as well for diabetic options)
1 tsp. Vanilla
Approx 12 ice cubes.
Put all ingredients in Blender and mix until ice cubes are small enough to drink through a straw.
I hope you give it a try 🙂
I have in the past made up the liquid by itself(without the ice cubes) and frozen it in a tray so that when I wanted a quick glass I could grab a few cubes and blend them up with a small amount of water to the desired thickness. It works great, and tastes awesome.

If you add a small scoop of Vanilla Pudding powder, it REALLY makes this drink a lot better! The ingredients in the pudding powder help to hold everything in the drink together, so you don’t get liquid/solid separation. Maybe even use the powder in lieu of the vanilla extract.

This recipe sounds great! My mom always made us Orange Julius too, but it was a little more involved, and I have yet to perfect it.

Oh my gosh, to paraphrase Veruca Salt…..”I want an Orange Julius…I want it now”! I loved these when we would go to the mall when my kids were little we would always leave with one. They left our area a long time ago. 🙁 Will have to try making my own…thanks for the recipe!
