Nothing is better on a cold morning than a big bowl of steel cut oatmeal….well, except a big bowl of Cinnamon Roll Oatmeal.
I’m so excited to be working with Udi’s again this month to share this amazing recipe I created using ancient grains. Ancient grains are kind of a hot topic these days and while I didn’t realize most of these were considered ancient grains, my family has been enjoying many of them for years. Some of my favorite ancient grains are quinoa, millet, chia, amaranth, flax and of course oats. All of these are gluten free; however, with oats you need to make sure to buy one with a gluten free label since oats are typically processed on the same machines as wheat.
Once I saw that this bag of steel cut oats had currants, flax, and chia I knew I had to do something with it. So this is how my brain works…ready for it. Mmmm…this bag has currants. Currants are like raisins. I like raisins. I like raisins in my cinnamon rolls…how come more companies don’t put raisins in their cinnamon rolls. Great, now I’m craving cinnamon rolls. That’s it! Cinnamon Roll Oatmeal for breakfast it is!
Let me tell you, this was crazy good! It tastes just like a warm, sweet, gooey cinnamon roll. It takes a fraction of the time of homemade cinnamon rolls and is a bit healthier. It’s still full of sugary good stuff, but it’s nicely balanced with steel cut oats, flax, and chia. It’s pretty much guilt free! {At least that’s what I’m telling myself!}
Ancient grains have remained unaltered and have retained their nutritional value, in fact, these grains date back to more than 8,000 years ago! Crazy, right? Ancient grains reduce the risk of chronic diseases and they are full of protein, antioxidants, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. They help prevent stroke, ward off diabetes, and help prevent heart disease. They also help curb weight gain since they are great at satiating appetite.
Incorporating ancient grains into your family’s diet is super easy. Ancient grains can be included in pretty much any dish where you would normally use rice or oats. For example, you can make chia pudding instead of oatmeal for breakfast. Instead of a rice pilaf, you can make a quinoa pilaf or quinoa salad for dinner! Substitute some or all of the rice in a Veggie Fried Rice. Add chia seeds to smoothies for extra health benefits. Many ancient grains can also be ground into flour to be used for baking.

Very good oatmeal! Not a fan of sweet stuff but this morning I was dying for a new way to prepare my morning oatmeal. I went very, very light on the icing and this was still SOOOOO GOOD and I am not even a fan of cinnamon rolls. My boyfriend absolutely loved it and was disappointed that I didn’t make enough for seconds. Too sweet/sugary for everyday but this is now in my permanent collection of recipes whenever I need variety or am making breakfast for someone else. Thank you so much!

That’s so good to hear Amy! Glad you like it…and I totally agree it’s not an everyday oatmeal, but is great on occasion. w-
