Slow Cooker Christmas Stuffing
My slow cooker Christmas stuffing is my favorite part about Christmas. And if I’m being honest, it’s my favorite part about Thanksgiving and Easter too. Y’all….it’s that good. I can’t have a holiday without it. It uses fresh bread cubes, not dried bread which is different than most recipes. I’ve played around with different types of breads and I haven’t met a version that I didn’t love.
Sourdough, White, Wheat, Whole Grain, Sprouted, Gluten free (yes, gluten free) and I even went crazy and mixed them a few times. My favorite blend is a hearty white and 9-grain. I love the extra flavor in the 9-grain.
Dressing or Stuffing
Do you call it dressing or stuffing? I don’t like mine cooked in the bird so it’s not really stuffing and in our house we call it dressing. They are really the exact same thing, the only difference is the way that they are cooked.
My favorite method is using my slow cooker, but I also love a good stove top dressing.
Gluten Free Dressing
I make this exact same recipe gluten free and dairy free. It’s so simple to swap in your favorite gluten free bread and if you need it to be dairy free, using Earth Balance sticks works like a charm. Gluten free bread is expensive and this recipe makes a ton of dressing and will take almost 2 full packages of gluten free bread, if made as written. The recipe is easy to halve, so if there aren’t a ton of gluten free people eating with you for the holidays, it would be wise to halve the recipe.
Christmas Stuffing
Save oven space by making your stuffing in the slow cooker. My slow cooker Christmas Stuffing is my most requested holiday dish and it's so easy to make.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter (or butter alternative)
- 3/4 cup minced onion
- 1 1/2 cups chopped celery
- 2 teaspoons coarse Kosher salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground sage
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 9 cups soft bread cubes (use your favorite bread, even gluten free), about 1 loaf
Instructions
Heat butter in a large skillet until melted and add onion and celery. Cook over medium high heat until vegetables are tender.
Stir in salt, sage, thyme, and pepper. Then mix in bread cubes and stir until the bread is evenly coated in the butter mixture.
Add a slow cooker liner to your crock (for easy clean up). Then add mixture to slow cooker and cook on low for 2-4 hours.
Makes 9 cups or enough to stuff into a 12 pound turkey.
Notes
Use your favorite bread. Sourdough, White, Wheat, Whole Grain, Sprouted, Gluten free (yes, gluten free) or go crazy and use two or three varieties.
Dairy Free/Vegan Dressing: Use a butter alternative.
This recipe is very forgiving and can be made gluten and dairy free with easy. It's delicious!
