You will never make a plain box of brownies again once you make this stunning BLACK FOREST BROWNIE CAKE with the flavors and look of a traditional Black Forest Cake, but with a decadent chocolate fudge brownie.
Even though I love scratch baking, I keep a little stock of various boxed mixes for whipping up easy desserts with the kids. They absolutely adore helping me bake, but don’t always have the patience for scratch baking. So when they want to help, we grab a box and whip it up. But then we go through the pantry and find what we have on hand to create fun variations.
This week we pulled a Pillsbury™ Gluten Free Brownie Mix, white frosting, cherry pie filling, and some almonds to make our twist on a Black Forest Cake. We are having some friends over for a BBQ this weekend, so I knew this would be a great way to end our evening. Isn’t so beautiful?!?!?
It was so fun and super easy to put together. No decorating skills needed! I just adore naked cakes…I don’t know why I like them so much…I just do.
I’ve found Walmart or Amazon to both have great prices on these mixes so I stock up on my month trip into Walmart. The prices on these mixes are usually lower than my grocery store’s so I do tend to pick up a few for quick and easy recipes, like my Chocolate Root Beer Cake or this Black Forest Brownie Cake.
My little man says you have to make it and that it’s his favorite brownie EVER! He told me I had to tell y’all…so there ya go!

Black Forest Brownie Cake
You will never make a plain box of brownies again once you make this stunning BLACK FOREST BROWNIE CAKE with the flavors and look of a traditional Black Forest Cake, but with a decadent chocolate fudge brownie.
Ingredients
- 2 boxes Pillsbury™ Gluten Free Brownie Mix
- 1 container Pillsbury™ White Frosting
- 1 can cherry pie filling
- 1 cup sliced almonds
- 5 maraschino cherries
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F. Spray 2 - 6 inch cake pans with non stick cooking spray and set aside.
- Prepare batter for brownie mixes according to package instructions and then pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake at 350F until fully cooked. (Note: It will take almost double the time to bake). Check for doneness at suggested time and then keep baking in 5-10 minute increments until fully cooked.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before carefully removing brownies from the pans. Let brownies cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
- If needed, cut off top of brownies to level them out and make them easier for decorating. Place one brownie on a cake stand and add a layer of frosting. Add a thick layer of cherry pie filling and then add the second brownie. (If needed insert a couple skewers through both levels of brownies for stability, cut the skewers so they don't poke out above the top brownie).
- Frost top of second brownie with remaining white frosting. Sprinkle with sliced almonds and a few more cherries.
