Skip the store bought ranch seasoning and make a batch of my Homemade Ranch Seasoning Powder. It’s made with ingredients you likely already have on hand and eliminates the MSG and maltodextrin found in the store bought packets.
Homemade Ranch Seasoning Powder
My homemade ranch seasoning is keto friendly, gluten free and will last about 2-3 months in the fridge. If you eliminate the buttermilk powder it will last 6-12 months in the pantry and will be considered vegan at that point. This is my homemade buttermilk ranch seasoning and it is delicious. So while you can leave out the buttermilk powder (if needed), I don’t recommend skipping if you don’t have to.
The best part about making your own seasoning powders is that you get to control the quality of ingredients and what exactly goes into your food. No hidden preservatives. No MSG. No maltodextrin. No corn starch. Just simple ingredients to create a simple seasoning mix.
How to Make Homemade Ranch Seasoning
Plus it’s easy to make. Just throw all the ingredients in a jar and give it a good shake. It really couldn’t be easier. If you prefer a fine ground, then put it in your blender or a clean coffee grinder and pulse a few times until you reach your desired consistency.

Homemade Ranch Options:
Homemade Spicy Ranch Seasoning: Make it spicy by adding 1-2 tablespoons of Chipotle Seasoning, like I did in this recipe.
Dairy Free/Vegan Ranch Seasoning: Leave out the buttermilk powder for a dairy free/vegan version. Then use your dairy free swaps to make it into a dip or dressing.
It’s already naturally gluten free and keto friendly.
Is ranch seasoning the same as ranch packet?
It sure is! Ranch seasoning and a ranch packet are the same thing. For my seasoning 3 tablespoons of my mix equals 1 store bought ranch packet.
What is ranch seasoning made of?
Store bought ranch seasoning is made with a blend of spices, but also contains maltodextrin, MSG, and usually some cornstarch or flour along with a bunch of other preservatives. Making your own blend at home will last in the fridge for a month or so and will be just a blend of buttermilk powder and seasoning. No crazy ingredients. No preservatives.
Can you substitute ranch dressing for ranch seasoning?
It really depends on the recipe and the use of the ingredient in the recipe. If the recipe calls for ranch dressing, then you’ll need to turn the dry ranch seasoning powder into a dressing first. Combine 1 tablespoon of seasoning mix with 1/3 cup mayo and 1/3 cup milk or half & half. Whisk to combine and taste to adjust seasoning level and thickness.
