Make up a batch or two of these Camping Margaritas for delicious slushie on your next camping trip.
Camping Margaritas
These margaritas require some advance planning because they need time to freeze before the camping trip. As with any alcohol, they will not freeze solid. They turn into the most amazing slushy margaritas and they really couldn’t be any easier.
I’ve learned over the years to double bag my margaritas because if I don’t something happens and the bag gets ruined and the margaritas end up spilling in the ice chest. No that is a total camping fail…I refuse to let my margaritas spill, so I take the extra precautions to double bag everything. Knock on wood, nothing has ruined them since I started doing that!
I have been using this recipe for probably 20 years and it’s always a hit when I pull the bag out on our camping trips. Our friends go crazy that I’m able to bring a slushie margarita with us and pull it out of the ice chest a couple days into our trip. Sippin’ one of these camping margaritas by the campfire is an amazing thing!

Camping Margaritas
Make up a batch or two of these Camping Margaritas for delicious slushie on your next camping trip.
Ingredients
- 1 (12 ounce) can limeade
- 3 (12 ounce) cans water (*see notes)
- 1 (12 ounce) can tequila + a couple splashes more
- 6 ounces (1/2 can) can triple sec
- 2 limes, cut into 6 wedges each
- margarita salt
Instructions
- To keep this recipe even easier, use the limeade can to measure all the other ingredients.
- Place everything into a ziptop baggie. Place filled bag, into a second baggie to keep it safe during transport (it's easier to double bag it before it freezes.) Freeze for several days until firm, transfer to an ice chest filled with lots of ice.
- When ready to serve, break the mixture apart until it's slushy.
- Set out 8 cups and rub a lime wedge around the rim of each cup, dip in salt to coat the rim. Pour into plastic cups that have been rimmed with margarita salt. Serve with a wedge of fresh lime.
Notes
* Use the limeade can to measure the water and tequila.
* Don't want to use a zip top bag, try freezing in an empty juice bottle (just leave an inch or two room at the top for expanding)
*Prep everything before going camping for easy serving. Slice all the limes and store in a bag in the cooler. Make sure there is clean ice for the drinks as well.

I have a recipe for an amaretto sour slushie but it involves ice & a blender. With your expertise how can I adjust the recipe to be able to mix it up & put in bags ahead of time for camping like your recipe? Maybe sub ice for water?
1/2 c. Amaretto; juice of 1 lemon; 2 T. Simple syrup; 2.5 c. Ice — mix all in blender

Hmmmm…I would think you’d just dump it all in a baggie like the margaritas (minus the ice). The alcohol won’t freeze and will give you that slushie feeling. Maybe a cup or two of water like you said (I’d start with a cup of water and see how it tastes and go from there). Definitely give it a try at home before you go…but it I bet it will work great. w-

Hi Wendy!
I loved this recipe for Camping Margaritas! I’m going to re-post the recipe on my blog tomorrow – linking to your page, of course. I’d love if you would take a peek and let me know what you think!
Thanks!

Why don’t you make it in an empty Ocean Spray juice bottle? Then you don’t have to double bag and its easy to pour. I am getting ready to go on the Grand Canyon and going to use your recipe that way.
Wendy O'Neal says
Great idea! w-

Yes! Too many single use plastic items! Recycle a beverage bottle and use reusable cups.

Im going camping tomorrow so I only have about a day for them to freeze, should I just use ice instead of water and blend it first before placing it in the freezer? Would it still taste good if I do it that way or would that mess it up?
Wendy O'Neal says
They should be fine with just a full day in the freezer. Although, I like the idea of blending with ice, then freezing…I might give that a try next time. Let me know how they turn out for you. w-

Just made a huge batch, and wow, I was skeptical but this is really good and well balanced. No more over sweet mixes for us! This is also awesome to just make at the beginning of summer, then kept in the fridge for on demand margaritas when company comes! Thank you!
Kara says
I went to buy the ingredients and they didnt have any limeaid so I bought a can of frozen margarita, could I just add the tequila and no triple sec (maybe double the tequila ??)? Also… I want to use it 2 days after putting it in the cooler (Cinco de mayo). Is that letting it thaw too much? If so, I’m just going to get a bottle of mix and try this out some other time. Would do a trial run but dont want to waste any tequila ?
Wendy O'Neal says
Hi Kara, I’m not sure what’s all the in frozen margarita can so I can’t say for sure about the triple sec. However, as for when to drink it…we drink them all trip long. The longer they are in the cooler the less slushy they are, so just keep it down at the bottom of the cooler until you are ready to drink. Enjoy! w-

These sound perfect for boating this summer!! Can’t wait to give them a try.

I love Margareta’s. But I like mine “on the rocks”. I don’t like the slush kind because it gives me a head ache lol
kelly says
I don’t like a lot of alcohol. Is this a lot, a little, or medium? Thanks!
Wendy O'Neal says
You could add less alcohol if you are worried. I like a medium amount…I don’t the alcohol to overpower the other flavors. Hopefully that gives you a guideline of where to start with the tequila. w-

Do you push the air out of the zip lock baggies or do you leave the air in? I have them in the freezer right now.
Wendy O'Neal says
I push the air out of the bags. Enjoy! w-

Nice and Easy!…I like this line in the post i.e. “I refuse to let my margaritas spill”…its like Wendy against the margarita…Wendy win!!!…anyway are you a fan of mojitos
Wendy O'Neal says
Lol! That’s right! I won’t let them spill. 🙂 And yes…love a good mojito! w-
Jeannie says
Could I put these in a gallon jug to freeze?
Wendy O'Neal says
I don’t see why not. I just don’t have the room when we go camping for large jugs. w-
