Homemade Southwest Chipotle Seasoning is a mixture of herbs and spices, that you probably already have in your pantry. It’s easy and delicious. Double or triple it for easy weeknight dinners for months.
I love making my own version of speciality seasoning blends because I can control the quality of the ingredients and the amount of salt {spoiler, this one is salt & sugar free) versus store bought blends. Have you ever read the ingredients on those seasoning blends???? They are full of fillers and all kinds of weird ingredients in those little jars.
How to Make Homemade Southwest Chipotle Seasoning
For my homemade Southwest Chipotle Seasoning recipe, mix all the ingredients including the chili powder, garlic, dried herbs, and cayenne/chipotle pepper in a small bowl. Store the seasoning blend in an airtight container for up to 6 months. Make a double, triple, quadruple batch for easy use at any time.
I love making my own blends, like this or my Chicken Fajita Seasoning. I can’t believe how simple making these at home are and I already had everything I needed in my pantry.
Whether you love making your spice blends or you have a Southwest Chipotle spice emergency and you need a copycat recipe…you’ll love how simple this one is. I don’t like buying speciality blends because I never use it all before they expire and yes they do expire. They don’t go bad, per se, but they do lose their potency.
What to put Southwest Chipotle Seasoning On
Making your own Southwest Chipotle Seasoning takes no time at all. I usually whip up a batch of this in under 5 minutes …okay really, I make a larger batch (like 3x this recipe).
My family LOVES this seasoning on everything from my Chipotle Ranch (which I use on my Southwest Vegetarian Salad, pictured below) to grilled chicken or grilled shrimp. I’ve found I use it in a lot of other dishes too. Just keep it stored in an airtight container, I like to use small mason jars. This quick homemade seasoning will be your go-to seasoning for so many recipes night.
How to Make Grilled Chipotle Chicken
Add chicken breasts to a zip top bag, add olive oil and Southwest Chipotle seasoning. Seal shut and toss to coat chicken evenly. Let marinate in the fridge for 20-30 minutes and cook over a medium high heat grill for 10 minutes per side or until juices run clear. Delish!
Salt Free Seasonings
Most of the seasoning blends on the market have a ton of salt and sugar added in. Heck, even the ones I make have salt in them. But over the years, I’ve learned that I prefer my seasoning blends to be salt free so that I can seasoning my meat or whatever I’m cooking with salt and pepper first and then add the flavorful seasoning blend.

My sister has kidney disease and an extremely restrictive diet because of it. One of the things she cannot have is salt, so as you can imagine, food is pretty bland. She uses the no salt blends from the store, but they had nothing quite like what she was looking for. I made this for her and she LOVES it! She just finished the first jar and is begging for more. Thank you for creating it.
